This original color lithograph by Marc Chagall was created as the cover for Derrière le Miroir, published by Maeght Éditeur in 1969. The composition features a radiant red rooster flying above a moonlit village, rendered in bold tones of blue, red, yellow, and earthy brown. The dreamlike imagery and floating figure reflect Chagall’s recurring themes of memory, folklore, and poetic transformation — evoking his Russian-Jewish heritage and a sense of mystical nostalgia. This lithograph introduces a portfolio of original works created for the issue.

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was one of the most influential modernist artists of the 20th century, known for his unique visual language that fused symbolism, fantasy, and personal myth.
