This beautiful antique engraving by Ulrik Thersner originates from the monumental work Fordna och närvarande Sverige (Ancient and Modern Sweden), published in Stockholm between 1828 and 1867. The engraving depicts Ekenäs Castle, one of Sweden's best-preserved Renaissance castles, located in Östergötland. The series aimed to document significant architectural and historical landmarks throughout Sweden.

Ulrik Thersner (1779–1828) was a Swedish military officer and artist, renowned for initiating and contributing to this comprehensive topographical project. Beginning his naval career at the age of seven during Gustav III's Russian War, he later served in the Army's navy, rising to the rank of sergeant and ensign by 1799. Appointed as an information officer in 1804, he conducted hydrographic surveys in Bohuslän and joined the Surveying Corps, becoming a lieutenant in 1808. Thersner played significant roles in campaigns against Norway and during the Finnish War and was promoted to major in the Surveying Brigade in 1814.
