This beautifully hand-coloured circular map of Devonshire is taken from John Thomson's A New General Atlas, first published in 1817. The map is framed by a decorative border with detailed geographic labeling of surrounding counties, rivers, and major towns. Below the map, a descriptive text provides an overview of Devonshire's geography, economy, and key features, including its market towns, parishes, and principal rivers—the Tamar, the Tave, the Ex, and the Dart. The engraving is finely detailed, highlighting important roads and territorial divisions with delicate colouring.

John Thomson (1777–1837) was a renowned Scottish cartographer and publisher, best known for his large-scale maps and detailed atlases. His New General Atlas was considered one of the most accurate and beautifully designed atlases of the early 19th century. Thomson's work is highly valued for its cartographic precision and artistic quality.
