3019 Peter Schenk the Elder (1660–1711) – Map of Meissen / Geographische Vorstellung derer Aemter Meissen – Hand-Coloured Copperplate Engraving (c.1700)

This highly detailed administrative map of the region around Meissen in Saxony includes the Ämter (districts) of Großenhain, Wurzen, Oschatz, and others. The map is richly annotated with hundreds of settlements, rivers, and forest areas, all finely engraved and hand-coloured. A monumental allegorical cartouche in the upper right shows classical figures, navigational instruments, and agricultural motifs, symbolizing commerce, governance, and abundance. A large textual panel along the right-hand side provides a systematic inventory of places by administrative division, including towns, fortresses, rivers, and wooded areas. The title reads: “Geographische Vorstellung derer Aemter Meissen...”. This work is by Peter Schenk the Elder, a Dutch-German cartographer and engraver who published extensively from Amsterdam and Leipzig.
Peter Schenk the Elder (1660–1711) was renowned for his accurate and visually rich maps, which contributed significantly to the dissemination of geographic knowledge in early 18th-century Europe.
