2995 Paulus Fürst (1608–1666) – Title Page to Libellus Novus Politicus Emblematicus Civitatum – Etching (1678)
This richly emblematic title page, created for Part 8 of Libellus Novus Politicus Emblematicus Civitatum, was published in Nuremberg in 1678. The central rectangular inscription space is framed by two heraldic emblems with Latin mottoes, flanked by four allegorical figures personifying the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America—each rendered with attributes typical of 17th-century iconography. The composition reflects the early modern fascination with symbolic geography and political allegory.
The etching is attributed to Paulus Fürst, a German engraver, publisher, and bookseller active in Nuremberg. Known for his emblem books, political prints, and portraits, Fürst played a key role in shaping the visual culture of the Thirty Years' War and its aftermath through his press and workshop.
