This 19th-century engraving illustrates the Battle of Ivry, one of the most iconic victories of King Henri IV of France during the French Wars of Religion, fought in 1590. Based on a painting by Lechard, the scene captures the royal army’s charge with Henri IV at the forefront, leading his troops with the legendary white plume on his helmet.

The engraving was published in Charles Gavard’s monumental Galeries historiques de Versailles, a visual chronicle of France’s royal and military history. Commissioned under King Louis-Philippe I, the project aimed to turn the Palace of Versailles into a Museum of the History of France. Gavard’s innovative engraving process using the diagraphe ensured high-fidelity reproductions of the original works. The Battle of Ivry stands out in the series as a symbol of unity and royal legitimacy during a time of civil conflict.
