99 Merry-Joseph Blondel (1781–1853) – The Third Crusade: The Surrender of Acre – Engraving from Galeries historiques de Versailles by Charles Gavard (1838–1849)

This large 19th-century engraving depicts the dramatic surrender of the city of Acre during the Third Crusade, after a painting by Merry-Joseph Blondel (1781–1853). The work was published as part of Charles Gavard’s Galeries historiques de Versailles, a monumental series documenting the artworks displayed in the newly established Museum of the History of France at the Palace of Versailles.
Under the patronage of King Louis-Philippe I, the museum and its visual documentation aimed to promote national unity and glorify France's historical legacy. Gavard’s use of the diagraphe, an innovative device he developed, allowed for highly accurate engravings that served both as artistic reproductions and historical records.
