95 Jean-Marc Nattier (1685–1766) after Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) – Allegorical Engraving – Time Reveals the Truth (Le Temps découvre la Vérité) – Engraving (1710)

This allegorical engraving titled Le Temps découvre la Vérité ("Time Reveals the Truth") was engraved by Jean-Marc Nattier after a composition by Peter Paul Rubens. The scene depicts Time unveiling the figure of Truth, lifting a nude woman toward the heavens while a celestial exchange occurs above between a crowned woman and a warrior-like figure—symbolizing the triumph of virtue and the divine order. The print serves as a moral and political allegory, referring to the strained relationship between Louis XIII and his mother, Marie de’ Medici, and attempting to restore the honor and righteousness of both sovereigns.
Originally conceived as part of a series glorifying the Medici lineage, the composition uses classical iconography and theatrical gestures to dramatize the theme of justice prevailing over slander and misunderstanding.
