73 Erik Dahlberg (1625–1703) – Set of 2 Engravings – Views of Uppsala, Sweden – From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna – Engravings (1690)

This set of two antique engravings presents historical views of Uppsala, one of Sweden’s most culturally and academically significant cities. The prints originate from Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna (Ancient and Modern Sweden), a monumental work initiated and compiled by Erik Dahlberg during the second half of the 17th century. Inspired by Matthäus Merian’s topographical works, Dahlberg’s vision was to glorify the Swedish Empire through a grand visual archive of architecture, landscapes, and urban centers. Although the project was not fully published until after his death, it remains one of Sweden’s most important contributions to European graphic history.
Erik Dahlberg (1625–1703) was a Swedish military engineer, architect, and topographical draftsman who became the director of fortifications under King Charles XI. His legacy is defined by Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, which captured the grandeur and ambitions of Sweden during its period as a great power. His drawings and engravings offer invaluable documentation of 17th-century Sweden and continue to influence Swedish historical imagery.
