This beautiful lithograph presents a tranquil view of Lysekloster, the ruins of a Cistercian monastery near Bergen, Norway. The image comes from Norge fremstillet i Tegninger (Norway Made in Drawings), a celebrated 19th-century visual publication that documented Norway’s landscapes and historical landmarks. The work was published by Christian Tønsberg in Kristiania in 1863.

Adolph Tidemand (1814–1876) was one of Norway’s most influential painters of the national romantic period, celebrated for his depictions of rural life, folk traditions, and dramatic scenery. His works combined ethnographic detail with idealized natural beauty, helping to define a visual identity for Norway during a formative period of nation-building. This lithograph reflects his delicate balance between documentation and artistic expression.
