This 17th-century Baroque engraving originates from Les guerres de Nassau ("The Wars of Nassau"), a historical work by Gerrit Baudartius, published in Amsterdam by M. Colin de Thovoyon in 1616. The engraving depicts a large military procession approaching the city of Brussels, marked clearly in the background. The scene is filled with soldiers on horseback and on foot, carrying banners and marching toward the fortified city. The dramatic composition captures the power and grandeur of Spanish rule during the reign of Philip II, with Don Luis de Requesens as governor of the Spanish Netherlands.

Gerrit Baudartius was a Dutch historian and engraver known for documenting military campaigns, particularly those of the House of Nassau. His engravings are detailed and dynamic, often portraying battles, sieges, and military occupations with exceptional narrative clarity.
