This original hand-coloured botanical engraving comes from Phythologia (1662), the herbal work by Johann Joachim Becher. The illustrated plants include various forms of Rhamnus (buckthorn) and Erica (heather), each accompanied by detailed depictions of leaves, berries, and stems. The verso provides poetic medicinal commentary in early German, describing the therapeutic applications of Erica in treating ailments such as kidney stones, gout, and obstructions in the limbs.

Johann Joachim Becher was a German physician, alchemist, and naturalist, widely known for his contributions to early chemistry and botany. His work reflects the scientific curiosity of the 17th century, merging empirical observation with speculative theories of nature.
