Rare engraving originates from series Sacra Eremus Ascetriarum by Boetius Adams Bolswert after Abraham Bloemaert, published in Antwerp, 1619.
Provenance: The Winfield Robbins print collection of Arlington, Massachusetts.
This rare early 17th-century engraving features Saint Eustochium, a Roman noblewoman and early Christian ascetic known for her devotion and correspondence with Saint Jerome. The composition belongs to the series Sacra Eremus Ascetriarum, a suite of engraved female saints and desert hermits. With her contemplative gaze and serene posture, Saint Eustochium is presented as a model of spiritual withdrawal and virtue, in line with Counter-Reformation ideals.
Boetius Adamsz. Bolswert (c.1580–1633) was a Flemish engraver known for his detailed and expressive prints. He initially worked in Amsterdam before settling in Antwerp, where he collaborated with prominent artists such as Peter Paul Rubens. Bolswert was particularly skilled in translating paintings into engravings, capturing intricate details and dramatic contrasts. His works include religious scenes, landscapes, and portraits, contributing significantly to the spread of Baroque art across Europe.
