"Temple de Latopoles on Ene & Conten Satepébe"

This antique engraving depicts the Temple de Latopoles on the Nile, a site associated with the ancient city of Esna in Upper Egypt. The plate is part of Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, pendant les campagnes de Bonaparte, Dominique Vivant Denon’s monumental visual record of Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt. This specific view captures architectural ruins and topographical features as observed by Denon during his travel alongside General Desaix in 1798–1800.

The work was published in London in 1809 by Samuel Bagster, as part of the English edition of Denon’s voyage. The engravings from this publication are of exceptional historical and artistic value, marking the first time many Egyptian monuments were systematically recorded and published in Europe.

Dominique Vivant Denon (1747–1825) was a French artist, writer, diplomat, and archaeologist. He became one of Napoleon’s close collaborators and was appointed first director of the Louvre. His observations in Egypt laid the foundation for modern Egyptology and inspired generations of explorers, historians, and artists.
