64 Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684–1743) – Administrative Chart of the Dutch East India Company / Gouvernement de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales – Engraving (1719)

This rare and highly detailed engraving presents the administrative organization of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as it existed in both the Netherlands and its overseas territories. At the center is the Council of the Seventeen (Heren Zeventien), flanked by representations of the six Chambers (Amsterdam, Zeeland, Rotterdam, Delft, Hoorn, and Enkhuizen) on the left, and four colonial advisory councils on the right. Each scene is accompanied by architectural interior details and captions, offering insight into the institutional framework of one of the most powerful trading companies of the 17th and 18th centuries. The engraving originates from Chatelain's monumental Atlas Historique.
Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684–1743) was a Huguenot pastor and cartographer known for his grand Atlas Historique, an ambitious encyclopedic project that combined maps, genealogies, and explanatory texts. His works were notable for their clarity, engraving quality, and historical scope, produced in collaboration with his father Zacharie and brother Zacharie Junior in Amsterdam.
