60 John Moffat (1788–1866) – Map of Caraccas and Guiana – Large Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving (1817)

"Caraccas and Guiana"
This large-format map was drawn and engraved by John Moffat for John Thomson's celebrated New General Atlas, published in Edinburgh in 1817. The map covers a vast region of northern South America, including present-day Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and the northernmost parts of Brazil. It features detailed depictions of rivers, mountain ranges, settlements, and colonial boundaries, all highlighted with original hand-coloring. The Caribbean islands are also included, along with a striking title cartouche. Published during a period of significant geopolitical transformation in South America, the map reflects the British cartographic precision of the early 19th century.
John Moffat (1788–1866) was a Scottish engraver and cartographer, known for his meticulous work on atlases and topographical prints.
