91 Jean-Laurent Krafft (1694–1768) – Monument to Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba – Copperplate Engraving (c.1720s)
This striking copperplate engraving by Jean-Laurent Krafft depicts an allegorical monument to Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel, 3rd Duke of Alba (1507–1582), a central figure in the Spanish suppression of the Dutch Revolt. Shown in full armor and towering over subdued figures symbolizing rebellion, the Duke stands atop a pedestal inscribed with a Latin dedication celebrating his loyalty to Philip II and the restoration of order in the Low Countries. The flanking panels titled Pietas and ΑΛΣ ΧΙΚΑΚΟΣ ΗΩΣ reinforce the spiritual and moral justification of his actions.
Jean-Laurent Krafft (1694–1768) was a Brussels-born engraver known for his mastery of both woodcut and intaglio techniques. After studying in the Dutch Republic and France, he returned to Brussels where he became renowned for his engravings after the works of Rubens, Van Dyck, and Titian. His work includes portraits of the Habsburg imperial family and illustrations marked by strong rhetorical symbolism and historical gravitas.
Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, was one of Spain’s most prominent generals. He served Charles V and Philip II across multiple campaigns and was appointed Governor of the Spanish Netherlands in 1567. His rule became infamous for its brutal repression and the establishment of the Council of Troubles, earning him the nickname “The Iron Duke.”
