Engraving by Jan Sadeler after Bartholomaeus Spranger, published in Cologne, 1581. The print was dedicated to Wolfgang Rumpf, a Carinthian nobleman, who made a rapid career in the services of Rudolf II and assumed the highly influential post of Imperial Chamberlain to the Emperor. The lyrical scene portrays the Holy Family with St John the Baptist and three angels, who are singing and playing the harp. As can be read in the inscription at the bottom of the sheet, the Holy Family is engaged in studying Scripture that is held by the Infant Jesus, who is sitting on Mary’s lap.
Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) was a prominent Flemish engraver during the late 16th century, known for his skilled copperplate engravings depicting religious and historical subjects. He came from a renowned family of artists, with several generations involved in graphic arts. Sadeler's works are renowned for their meticulous detail, precision, and ability to capture depth and dimension in the images.
