134 Johann Joachim Becher (1635–1682) – Elephant and Rider from Zoologia – Woodcut Print (1678)

This antique woodcut depicts an elephant ridden by an armed figure, under the heading Zoologia. It belongs to a series of early zoological representations combining observation with imaginative interpretation. The exaggerated anatomy and posture reflect early modern Europe's perception of exotic animals, often filtered through second-hand accounts and moral symbolism. German text below describes the animal’s features and uses.
Johann Joachim Becher (1635–1682) was a German alchemist and economic theorist who advocated for economic regulation through mercantilist measures such as protective tariffs and manufactures. He gained extensive knowledge in medicine, chemistry, physics, and politics. After converting to Catholicism, he became a professor in Mainz in 1657 and later served as the court physician and economic advisor to the Elector.
