12 Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) – Map of the Kingdom of Naples / Carte du Royaume de Naples – Hand-Colored Engraving (1808)

"Carte du Royaume de Naples, dessinée et gravée par Ambroise Tardieu"
This historical map depicts the southern part of the Italian Peninsula, known as the Kingdom of Naples, including Calabria, Apulia, and parts of Campania and Basilicata. Surrounding seas — the Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, and Ionian — are clearly labeled, along with key coastal cities and inland towns. The map includes parts of Sicily and the Lipari Islands, with political borders delicately outlined in hand-applied watercolor. The cartography is precise, reflecting the period’s high standards of scientific geography.
Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) was a distinguished French cartographer and engraver, known for his detailed atlases and geographic works. A nephew of the famed engraver Pierre Tardieu, he succeeded in making a name for himself through both original works and updated editions of earlier maps. His work often blended clarity, precision, and artistic elegance, contributing to the popularization of geography during the 19th century. Many of his maps were published in France and used for educational and governmental purposes.
