Set of 2 magnificent chromolithographs from the seminal work Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar (Sweden's Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms), published in Stockholm by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences between 1860 and 1866. These detailed illustrations depict two distinct fungal species: Sparassis crispa (commonly known as the cauliflower mushroom), with its intricate folds and fronds, and Hydnum imbricatum, recognizable by its scaly cap and tooth-like structures beneath.

Elias Fries, often referred to as the “father of mycology,” was a pioneering Swedish botanist whose work laid the foundations for fungal taxonomy. His Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar was not only a scientific reference but also a visual education tool, aimed at making mushroom identification accessible. The chromolithographs were printed by A. J. Salmson, based on original drawings by Elias Pettersson and Petter Åkerlund, under Fries’s guidance.
