74 Cornelis de Jode (1568–1600) – Capture of the City of Steenvoorde by the Spanish Troops – Copperplate Engraving (c.1616)
The print depicts the siege and capture of Steenvoorde by Spanish troops during the reign of Philip II. The engraved scene shows Spanish forces storming the city as the defenders retreat in chaos, accompanied by explanatory Latin inscriptions. The print includes the caption "Soubz Philippe II, gouvernant Parmes & les Estats" and was likely published in an illustrated chronicle of the Dutch Revolt.
Cornelis de Jode (1568–1600) was a Flemish cartographer and engraver, son of the renowned mapmaker Gerard de Jode. Although best known for his cartographic work, Cornelis also produced historical and religious engravings. His detailed copper engravings were part of early efforts to visually document historical events in the Low Countries. Much of his work was printed and distributed in Antwerp in the late 16th century.
