81 Gerardin after Pietro da Cortona (1596–1669) – Antique Engraving – Masinissa Offering the Poisoned Cup to Sophonisba (1691)

This finely detailed copper engraving by Gerardin reproduces the dramatic scene by Pietro da Cortona, in which Masinissa offers Sophonisba a poisoned cup to preserve her honor from the Romans. The Latin inscription reads: Eodem Poculo Masinissa fidei in Romanos, libertati Sophonisba litavit. The composition is part of a series based on the lunettes painted by Cortona in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, between 1641 and 1647. This engraving was published in Rome by Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi in 1691.
Gerardin was an engraver active in the late 17th century, known for his precise interpretations of Baroque paintings. His work was often included in major Roman print collections, including those issued by the De Rossi publishing house, which played a key role in circulating Italian masterpieces across Europe.
