This striking set of two hand-colored engravings features a variety of snake species from the order Ophidia, illustrating both venomous and non-venomous reptiles from different regions of the world. Among the species shown are the Coral Snake (Elaps fulvius), Boa (Boa constrictor), Python (Python reticulatus), Tree Snake (Dendrophis pictus), Whip Snake (Psammophis sibilans), and several other distinctly patterned serpents.

Each specimen is carefully depicted with vibrant coloration and detailed scalation, providing valuable insight into the diversity and adaptability of serpentine anatomy. These plates were part of a comprehensive zoological volume published by William MacKenzie, intended to document the natural world for both scientific and educational purposes. The engravings were executed by J.W. Lowry, based on naturalist sources of the time.
