135 William MacKenzie (1794–1868) – Set of 2 Plates – Amphibia: Siren, Axolotl, Salamander, Newt, Caecilian & Proteus – Hand-Colored Engravings (c.1860s)

This set of two hand-colored engravings presents a detailed visual study of amphibians, featuring species such as the Siren of Mud eel (Siren lacertina), Axolotl (Amblystoma mexicanum), Proteus (Proteus anguinus), Caecilian (Gastrotheca), Marbled Newt (Triturus marmoratus), and Spotted Salamander (Salamandra maculosa). The illustrations are grouped by order and genus, highlighting both aquatic and terrestrial lifeforms within the Amphibia class.
The upper plate focuses on eel-like and limbless amphibians, showing their unique adaptations to aquatic life and cave environments. The lower plate presents robust and colorful salamanders and newts, emphasizing morphological variety and pigmentation. These plates reflect the mid-19th century fascination with zoological taxonomy and anatomical accuracy, and were originally published by William MacKenzie as part of a larger natural history volume aimed at education and scientific dissemination. The illustrations were drawn by F. Smith and engraved by J.W. Lowry.
