This emotionally charged etching shows an elderly, bearded man—interpreted as Saint Peter—standing at a table with a handkerchief held to his eye, wiping away tears. His face is turned slightly to the left, rendered with deep sorrow and dramatic chiaroscuro. The print was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi after a drawing by Guercino and was originally included in the collection Eighty-two prints, engraved by F. Bartolozzi &c. from the original drawings of Guercino, in the collection of His Majesty, published in London by John and Josiah Boydell. This version is a proof before letters, printed in brown ink, which showcases the emotional depth and technical finesse of Bartolozzi’s work.

The work was published by Francesco Bartolozzi in London, c. 1764. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino, hailed from the small town of Cento in the province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy. He worked between 1621 and 1623 in Rome, where he experienced one of his most productive and influential creative periods.
