This expressive portrait shows a woman in elaborate Eastern attire, her arm raised with theatrical grace. The composition is based on a drawing by the Italian Baroque master Giovan Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino, and was etched by Francesco Bartolozzi around 1764 using the delicate manière de crayon (crayon manner), a technique simulating chalk or pencil drawings. The work exemplifies Bartolozzi’s mastery in translating Old Master drawings into refined printed works for broader distribution.

The work was published by Francesco Bartolozzi in London, c. 1764. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Il Guercino, hailed from the town of Cento in the province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy. He worked in Rome between 1621 and 1623, where he experienced his most productive and influential period of artistic creativity.
