This original hand-coloured set of 8 engravings is from James Sowerby's ”English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth”, published by J. Davis in London in 1790 - 1814. First edition of the extensively illustrated botanical series. The reverse side of this engraving is blank.

James Sowerby was an English naturalist and illustrator born in 1757 and died in 1822. He is best known for his extensive work in botanical illustration, particularly in his publication "English Botany." Sowerby produced thousands of detailed and accurate illustrations of plants, which were highly valued for their scientific precision. His contributions significantly advanced the study of British flora and made botanical knowledge more accessible.
