”La Ville d’Anvers”

This engraving shows the fortified city of Antwerp (Anvers), situated along the Scheldt River. The map highlights the geometric structure of the bastion walls and detailed inner street grid of the city. In the top right corner is the coat of arms of Antwerp, while in the lower left corner, the legendary hero Silvius Brabo is depicted holding the severed hand of the giant Druon Antigoon — a reference to the founding myth of the city. The giant lies beneath him, bleeding from the wrist. The map’s rich visual narrative combines urban cartography with allegorical symbolism

Jacobus Harrewijn was a Flemish engraver active in the Southern Netherlands during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He worked extensively in Brussels and Antwerp, producing religious, historical, and topographical prints. His style is characterized by strong lines, narrative detail, and compact city views. This work was created around the turn of the 18th century but is not listed in the Hollstein catalogue.
