159 Elias Magnus Fries (1794–1878) – Set of 2 Mushroom Studies – Agaricus (Lepiota) excoriatus / Agaricus (Clitocybe) odorus – Chromolithographs from Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar (1860–1866)

These chromolithographs depict two distinctive mushroom species: Agaricus (Lepiota) excoriatus and Agaricus (Clitocybe) odorus, captured with remarkable botanical accuracy. They originate from Elias Magnus Fries’s influential work Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar ("Sweden’s Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms"), a richly illustrated publication designed to bridge scientific knowledge and public education about fungi.
The work was published in Stockholm by P. A. Norstedt & Söner for the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences between 1860 and 1866.
Fries, one of the foremost figures in mycology, worked in collaboration with illustrators Elias Pettersson and Petter Åkerlund, whose drawings were brought to life through chromolithography by A. J. Salmson. The series was published in ten parts over seven years and played a central role in establishing a systematic understanding of Scandinavian fungi.
