156 Nicolas Gaucher (1846–1911) & Johann Georg Keller (1790–1858) – Set of 4 Botanical Prints – Pear Varieties – Hand-colored engraving (1894)

This set of four exquisite chromolithographs showcases different varieties of pears, each rendered with scientific clarity and artistic elegance. The depicted varieties include Hardenponts Winterbutterbirne, Grumkower Butterbirne, Monchalard, and Gellerts Butterbirne. The plates were part of Gaucher’s praktischer Obstbaumzüchter ("Gaucher’s Practical Fruit Tree Breeder"), an important pomological reference work from the late 19th century. Each image is accompanied by German varietal names and was printed using the chromolithographic process, allowing for rich, vibrant coloration faithful to the fruits' natural appearance.The work was published by Lith. Anst. v. Keller & Co., Frankfurt, in 1894.
Nicolas Gaucher (1846–1911) was a French horticulturist and author specializing in fruit tree cultivation. His works provided practical guidance for orchardists and included meticulously illustrated botanical plates.
Johann Georg Keller (1790–1858) was a Swiss printer and lithographer, co-founder of the famous printing house Keller & Co. in Frankfurt, known for their high-quality chromolithographic production. His firm was instrumental in printing botanical and scientific works with exceptional precision.
