Miniature map of Portugal originates from ”Atlas Minimorum Universalis” published by Robert Sayer and Andrew Dury, engraved by John Gibson.
The first edition of the atlas was issued in 1761 and this second edition of 1763 was aimed at the French market. It is distinguished from the first edition by the addition of a French geographical title on the upper margin.
John Gibson (fl. 1750–1792) was a British engraver and cartographer active during the 18th century. He is best known for his detailed work on miniature and decorative maps, often collaborating with prominent publishers like Robert Sayer and Andrew Dury. Gibson's maps are admired for their precision and aesthetic quality, frequently included in atlases and geographical compendiums of the period. His contributions played a significant role in the dissemination of geographic knowledge during the Age of Enlightenment.
