61 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Discovery and Voyages: Map of Brazil – Woodcut (c. 1544-1628)

This historical woodcut, titled "Erfindung vnd Schiffarten" (Discovery and Voyages), presents an early map of "BRASILIA" (Brazil). The map depicts a coastal region with islands and several sailing ships, complete with a prominent compass rose. The surrounding German text elaborates on various aspects of discovery and maritime travel to the region. This print offers a valuable glimpse into 16th-century European cartographic understanding of South America and the era's ambitious voyages of exploration.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is most renowned for his monumental Cosmographia (first published in 1544), which was one of the earliest German-language descriptions of the world. This hugely popular and influential atlas-chronicle included hundreds of woodcut maps, city views, and illustrations, covering a wide array of geographical, historical, and cultural subjects. Münster's efforts significantly contributed to the spread of geographical knowledge during the Renaissance, making his Cosmographia a landmark achievement in publishing history.
