This early map of Terre de Van Diemen (Van Diemen’s Land, now known as Tasmania) offers a French rendering of the southern coastlines explored during the early European voyages to the region. The chart outlines bays, capes, and tentative interior features based on limited 17th- and 18th-century observations. Coastal naming and orientation reflect early French and Dutch cartographic influence in the Southern Hemisphere before the island’s full circumnavigation.

The engraving is attributed to Robert Bernard, whose cartographic contributions were included in mid-18th-century geographical compendia and travel accounts. This map would have served both as a record of colonial ambition and a speculative visual guide to one of the most remote lands known to European explorers at the time.
