123 Antonio Caldani – Anatomy of the Pelvis – Engraving (1813)

This exceptional anatomical engraving titled TABULA COLEXIL comes from Icones anatomicae; Iconum anatomicarum explicatio by Leopoldo Marco Antonio Caldani, published in Venice between 1801 and 1814. It presents a highly detailed study of the human pelvic region, rendered with remarkable clarity and precision. The copperplate engraving combines scientific rigor with artistic execution, reflecting the Enlightenment ideal of anatomical visualization as both a medical and aesthetic pursuit. The work served as a vital teaching tool for early 19th-century medical education.
Leopoldo Caldani (1725–1813) was an Italian anatomist and physiologist, best known for his contributions to neuroanatomy and his continuation of the anatomical legacy of Giovanni Battista Morgagni. He held the chair of anatomy at the University of Padua and collaborated with his nephew Floriano Caldani to produce one of the most comprehensive anatomical atlases of the period.
