127 Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne (1589–1662) – Sibi Nequam Cui Bonus – Engraving

This emblematic engraving by Adriaen van de Venne, published in the 1655 edition of Sinnelick leven by Jacob Cats, presents a crocodile on the banks of the Nile accompanied by the Latin title Sibi Nequam Cui Bonus? ("He who is of no use to himself, to whom is he good?"). The image illustrates a moralizing allegory about self-neglect and false friendship. Beneath the composition, Dutch, Latin, and French verses reflect on the deceptive nature of those who appear helpful but are ultimately self-serving.
Rendered with crisp linework and symbolic detail, the crocodile is shown with an open mouth, alluding to the fabled relationship with the Trochilus bird, which cleans its teeth. This emblem draws on classical natural history to convey moral lessons—a hallmark of van de Venne’s engravings for Cats’s widely read emblem books.
