138 Jacques de Sève (active 1740–1788) – La Bourbeuse – Original Copperplate Engraving – 18th Century

This engraving presents La Bourbeuse, a freshwater turtle species depicted moving through a rocky stream beneath a rustic wooden bridge. The turtle is shown from a slightly elevated perspective, allowing for a clear view of its domed shell, limb structure, and characteristic facial features. The flowing water and natural setting are rendered with a theatrical sense of depth and movement, reflecting de Sève’s distinctive integration of zoological detail and landscape scenery. The plate was produced for Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, where reptiles were illustrated with both scientific interest and decorative flourish.
Jacques de Sève was a key contributor to Buffon’s encyclopedic works, illustrating hundreds of animal species in a uniquely stylized yet scientifically grounded manner. His engravings remain among the most recognizable visual records of Enlightenment-era natural history.
