149 Jacques de Sève (active 1740–1788) – Le Tamatia (The Jacamar) – Original Copperplate Engraving – Paris, 18th Century

This refined copperplate engraving by Jacques de Sève depicts Le Tamatia, the French name for a Jacamar—a tropical bird found in the Americas, known for its long bill and iridescent plumage. The bird is shown perched proudly on a rock formation in a lush landscape, with distant architecture and clouds framing the scene. The composition, labeled Tom. VII, Pl. XXVII, pag. 194, comes from Buffon’s renowned Histoire Naturelle, one of the most influential natural history encyclopedias of the Enlightenment.
Jacques de Sève was a French illustrator celebrated for his zoological engravings in Buffon’s publications. His illustrations were admired for combining scientific accuracy with artistic beauty, placing each subject in an imaginative and often theatrical environment.
