This engraved map by Benard presents a detailed coastal view of the Bay of Bonthain (present-day Bantaeng) located approximately 30 leagues southeast of Macassar (Makassar), on the island of Celebes (modern Sulawesi), Indonesia.

Published in 1774 for the French edition of John Hawkesworth’s account of James Cook’s first voyage, the chart shows coastal features, soundings, anchorages, and topographical details relevant to 18th-century maritime navigation. The map was produced during the Age of Exploration when European powers actively surveyed distant shores. This engraving exemplifies the era’s precision in hydrographic charting and is a rare early depiction of this Indonesian region.
