35 Frederik de Wit – Map of Swabia / Circulus Suevicus – Engraving (c.1680)

This impressive map of the Swabian Circle (Circulus Suevicus) was produced by the renowned Dutch cartographer Frederik de Wit around 1680. It depicts the territories of Württemberg, Baden, Hohenzollern, Ulm, Augsburg, and other constituent states of the Holy Roman Empire. The map features dense topographic detail, naming towns, rivers, and political divisions with exceptional clarity.
A decorative cartouche in the upper right corner bears the Latin title, while the lower left corner showcases a grand array of heraldic shields representing the various Swabian states. The composition is further enriched by allegorical figures, cherubs, and baroque ornamentation — characteristic of De Wit’s elaborate cartographic style. This map exemplifies the 17th-century Dutch golden age of atlas production.
