4870 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Clematis flammula & Clematis passionalis – Original Hand-Coloured Mezzotint from Phytanthoza Iconographia – Dutch Edition (1736–1748)

This refined botanical mezzotint features two species of Clematis, notable for their climbing forms and floral delicacy. The left specimen (a) is identified as Clematis flammula Jovis, with narrow lanceolate leaves and fine, white star-shaped blossoms. The right specimen (b) is Clematis passionalis flore campanulato, shown as a coiling vine with lobed leaves and small bell-shaped flowers. Both plants are illustrated with accuracy and elegance, characteristic of Weinmann’s visual approach. Numbered “No. 304” in the upper right corner, the plate belongs to the Dutch edition of Phytanthoza Iconographia, printed in Amsterdam by Zacharias Romberg.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical illustrator whose Phytanthoza Iconographia remains a landmark in 18th-century scientific publishing. It was the first large-scale botanical work to successfully use colour-printed mezzotint, establishing a new standard for accuracy and aesthetic quality in botanical art.
