This elaborate copperplate engraving by Pieter van der Aa depicts the forty-year biblical journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan, as described in Numbers 33. The map offers a sweeping bird’s-eye view of the Sinai Peninsula, Red Sea, Dead Sea, and surrounding regions, with encampments and key locations marked along the Israelites’ route. The composition is framed by a large decorative cartouche in Dutch, emphasizing the divine promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Pieter van der Aa (1659–1733) was a Dutch cartographer, publisher, and bookseller based in Leiden. Renowned for his prolific output, he specialized in reissuing earlier maps with ornate embellishments and was instrumental in shaping the visual culture of sacred and historical cartography during the Enlightenment.
