This elaborate copperplate engraving by Pieter van der Aa depicts the forty-year biblical journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan, as described in Numbers 33. The map offers a sweeping bird’s-eye view of the Sinai Peninsula, Red Sea, Dead Sea, and surrounding regions, with encampments and key locations marked along the Israelites’ route. The composition is framed by a large decorative cartouche in Dutch, emphasizing the divine promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
