This detailed 18th-century copperplate engraving, titled Fabbrica d’Indaco, depicts the process of indigo production in the Americas. Workers are shown preparing the indigo leaves, operating fermentation vats, and laying out drying racks under the sun. A technical inset at the bottom details the construction of the drying structures, while the upper cartouche contains a numbered legend in Italian verse describing each step. The scene provides both scientific and economic insight into the colonial dye industry.

Giovanni Maria Cassini was an Italian engraver and cartographer active in Rome and Livorno during the Enlightenment. He contributed numerous engravings to scientific and geographical publications, including the Italian translation of The American Gazetteer published by Marco Coltellini in 1763. His works are valued for their clarity, technical detail, and integration of educational and aesthetic elements.
