Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, and encyclopedist, considered one of the most influential figures in the development of natural history. His magnum opus, Histoire Naturelle, published in multiple volumes from 1749 to 1788, sought to document and visually represent all known forms of life with empirical detail and stylistic elegance. The anatomical plates from this work exemplify his ambition to unify science and art in the service of Enlightenment knowledge.
