4559 Cornelis Bloemaert II (1603–1692) – Sanctus Onuphrius – Engraving – 17th Century

This fine Baroque engraving depicts Saint Onuphrius, the Egyptian hermit, in an ascetic wilderness setting. Emaciated, bearded, and clothed only by his hair, the saint is shown kneeling before a visiting figure—possibly an angel or Saint Paphnutius—offering communion in the form of bread. The sacred scene is rendered with masterful chiaroscuro, expressive drapery, and emotional solemnity. The composition emphasizes the saint’s spiritual detachment from the world and divine favor through his solitary devotion.
Cornelis Bloemaert II was a Dutch engraver from Utrecht, renowned for his precise and refined technique. Trained by his father, Abraham Bloemaert, and later influenced by Italian masters in Rome, he became one of the leading engravers of the 17th century. His work played a significant role in disseminating the compositions of major Baroque artists across Europe. This engraving is a superb example of Bloemaert’s ability to transform religious subjects into emotionally and technically sophisticated prints.
