This hand-coloured engraving depicts Cyprinus Buggenhagii, a freshwater carp known as "Der Leber" or "La Carpe de Buggenhagen". The fish is shown in full lateral profile, highlighting its compact body, deeply arched back, and silver-scaled texture with meticulous precision. An anatomical diagram is also included in outline at the upper left. The print is plate XIV from Marcus Elieser Bloch’s renowned ichthyological series Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, which aimed to classify and beautifully illustrate the known fish species of the 18th century.

Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) was one of the most influential naturalists of his era. His scientific and artistic contributions to ichthyology set a new standard for taxonomic illustration. Bloch’s plates are praised for their hand-coloured accuracy, lifelike rendering, and attention to anatomical detail, making his work indispensable to both scientists and collectors.
