This copperplate engraving titled Hydraulics & Hydrostatics presents mechanical instruments and devices used in the study of water pressure, fluid mechanics, and submersion physics. The upper half features two versions of the diver’s bell—illustrated in use underwater and diagrammatically labeled—as well as a large fire engine, a water pump, sectional pipe systems, and valve mechanisms. Each object is labeled with corresponding letters and figures for reference in accompanying encyclopedic text. The plate comes from the 1786 Cyclopaedia edited by Abraham Rees, following the foundational structure laid by Ephraim Chambers.

Ephraim Chambers (c.1680–1740) pioneered the encyclopedic organization of knowledge in the English-speaking world. Abraham Rees (1743–1825), a Unitarian scholar and polymath, extended Chambers’s project with additional scientific rigor and hundreds of technical engravings. The Rees’s Cyclopaedia became one of the most important British scientific reference works of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
