4525 Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677) – Study of Elephants – Zoological Engraving – 17th Century

This engraving depicts three elephants: one walking, one lifting food with its trunk, and two facing each other in interaction. The animals are portrayed with deep attention to muscle structure, skin folds, and behavior. The composition may have been based on drawings from exotic menageries or travelers’ accounts.
Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677) was among the first engravers to document exotic animals in such detail. His studies combined artistic sensitivity with Enlightenment-era curiosity about the natural world, bridging art and science.
