124 Frans Theodor Hedberg (1828–1908) – View of Gothenburg, Sweden – Chromolithograph from Pittoreskt Sverige (1861)

This original chromolithograph presents a picturesque 19th-century view of Gothenburg (Göteborg), Sweden, as seen along the historic canal route connecting Stockholm and the west coast. The image captures the city’s serene waterfront and urban architecture nestled within its natural landscape, rendered in vivid colour and fine lithographic detail.
The plate was published in 1861 by Albert Bonniers Förlag in Stockholm as part of Pittoreskt Sverige. Första serien: Kanalfärden mellan Stockholm och Göteborg (“Picturesque Sweden. First Series: The Canal Journey Between Stockholm and Gothenburg”). This work showcased scenic and architectural landmarks along the canal voyage and was part of a broader effort to document Sweden’s national landscape through modern printing techniques.
Frans Theodor Hedberg, a noted Swedish lithographer and illustrator, played a vital role in capturing the visual heritage of 19th-century Sweden. His collaboration with leading artists and publishers produced some of the most refined chromolithographic views of the era, preserving the character of Swedish towns and countryside during a period of transformation.
