155 Adalbert Seitz (1860–1938) – Set of 4 Butterfly Plates – Lethe, Acrophthalma, Zophoessa – Chromolithographs from Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde (1909–1915)

This set of four antique butterfly prints features richly illustrated species from the subfamily Satyrinae, known for their earthy tones and eyespots. The plates include Acrophthalma lethe, multiple forms of Lethe butterflies from the Palaearctic region, and the exotic Zophoessa melanitis from tropical Asia. These butterflies, often forest-dwellers, are notable for their camouflage and striking ventral wing patterns.
Produced as chromolithographs for Adalbert Seitz’s landmark publication Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde (“The Macrolepidoptera of the World”), these plates reflect a balance of scientific accuracy and artistic quality. Each specimen is rendered with careful attention to wing shape, venation, and regional variation—key for entomological identification.
Seitz’s work remains one of the most important references in the study of global Lepidoptera and serves as a visual archive of species diversity from the early 20th century.
